This book is aimed at herbal practitioners at all stages of practice, presenting recent insights on the hormonal basis of gynaecological problems in order to enable practitioners to devise effective treatment plans and explain them clearly to their patients.

The book is in four sections, graduating from general principles to detailed application.

Section 1 examines the sources, metabolism and role of oestrogens in health and disease, and the influence of diet, lifestyle and different types of phyto-oestrogens on the levels and the actions of oestrogens. We also look at the role of progesterone and herbal influences on its production.

Section 2 covers general principles of herbal treatment based on the interaction of the digestive, circulatory, endocrine and nervous system to support health and recovery from disease. These principles are applied to treatment and case management of gynaecological problems, with a detailed examination of the psychoneuroimmunological background, diet and supplements (e.g. soya and flaxseed) and informing patients about integrated herbal treatment.

Section 3 examines specific herbs categorized by their constituents and actions: isoflavone-rich herbs such as Trifolium repens; herbs containing steroidal saponins, such as Dioscorea villosa, herbs containing triterpenoid saponins such as Cimicifuga racemosa and progesterone-influencing herbs such as Vitex agnus castus. We also look at other herbs researched in relation to gynaecology such as Hypericum perforatum.

Section 4 looks specifically at the menopause and at PMS, as these illustrate the principles of treatment discussed in sections 2 and 3, and are very frequently seen in practice. An appendix will give a pointer to how to apply similar principles to other hormonal conditions such as osteoporosis, uterine fibroids which (along with other conditions) will be covered in more detail in the second book of this series.
