First published in 1993, Elisabeth Brooke’s powerful exploration of women’s role as healers through the ages and their continuing fight for recognition is now expanded and updated. Tracing a lineage that spans the centuries back to antiquity, this book celebrates women in medicine from Ancient Egypt and Classical Greece and Rome to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the present.

Informed by the author’s understanding of the politics of medicine and fused with her appreciation of the powers of myth versus those of technology, this new reissue is an invaluable resource, updated with brand new sections on twentieth-century pioneers such as Rosemary Gladstar, healers of colour, community medicine, and end of life care.
