Synopsis

A guide examining the causes of poor sleep, and how to treat it with herbs and natural healing

Insomnia is a major problem for many people, and a minor one for most, often caused by things such as stress, pain, digestive issues, urinary problems and hormones. In the author's twenty two years of herbal practise, at least half of the people seen have had some kind of sleep issue. It may be waking at 5am, when they would rather not, or it may be impossible to get to sleep, or if they do go to sleep they wake every hour.

Sleep problems are inextricably linked with whole body health - fix one and the other gets fixed too. The way to fix it will vary from one person to another and requires detective work to establish the problem which will then offer the answer.

Read a magazine article, or an internet feature, or most books on sleep, and you will learn all about sleep hygiene and also maybe about a few sedative herbs such as valerian or chamomile. However most people with sleep problems are very well aware of all these things and they just haven’t worked for them. There are also the books on sleep where one person has found the way that works for them so they evangelise this one way for everyone else.

Sleep: The Elixir of Life is different from all the rest because it looks at all the many reasons for poor sleep - such as stress, pain, digestive issues, urinary problems and hormones - and goes through ways to treat them and hence solve the sleep problem. The methods used to treat them include herbal medicine, dietary and lifestyle changes, flower remedies and essential oils. This book is all about finding a way through an individual's health problems to fix sleep in the best way possible, by actually treating the cause of the problem.

This is the herbal book for insomniacs! It is so comprehensive and definitely needed, as there is no other book like it. I love the way Christine has written with such apparent ease, in a straightforward and accessible way. It is clear that this is the hand of an experienced practitioner with many years of treating sleep problems, especially as she adeptly addresses the underlying causes of sleep problems and does not simply describe symptomatic treatment. A valiant task perfectly fitting such an important subject, as sleep truly is the elixir of life!

Andrew Chevalier, Medical herbalist, and author of Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine on 26/05/2021

This book takes a long thoughtful look at the range of ways natural treatments - herbal medicines in particular - can promote better sleep. Avoiding the overly simple idea that sedatives work best for disordered sleep, this book provides a wealth of useful information, both for those seeking a better night's sleep, and natural medicine practitioners looking for new ideas. Recommended.

Cathy Skipper, BEd (Hons) herbalist, aromatherapist and teacher on 26/05/2021

This book reminds us that sleep is at the very heart of our overall health. Christine Herbert’s experience through many years of working as a medical herbalist makes the reader feel they are definitely in the right hands on this subject. The in-depth information that covers all the principle underlying health issues related to sleep problems is extremely well laid out and easy to understand. The case studies woven throughout the book really help to highlight Christine’s practical and effective approach and make her suggestions accessible. The Materia medica like the rest of the book is in-depth and yet simply and clearly presented and I loved having some recipes and dietary information too. Nothing has been left out of this much needed book. I am very happy to finally have an excellent reference book for this very important subject. Thank-you Christine.
